Cutting New Tracks

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

Work has begun on two Jeremy Lyons projects: the long-awaited solo album of mostly original material, and a follow-up to Delta-Silly Music for Kids. Both CDs have been in the planning stage for some time; both are being recorded at multiple studios. As if working on two projects concurrently were not enough, plans are also in the works for a second album for Jeremy and Members of Morphine Dana Colley and Jerome Deupree.

Please check out the “Tour” page for updated gig listing.

Musical Peas and Cabbage to start the New Year right

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

Hi Friends,

This Saturday, 1/1/11. You need some musical Peas and Cabbage to start the New Year right.

I’m honored to fill in for my old New Orleans friend Anders Osborne at the Narrows Center for the Arts in Fall River, MA — a truly fabulous performance space. I’ll be headlining a bill that includes these talented folk ‘n blues artists: Louis Leeman, Curtis Prince, and Mark T. Small.

This show is only $10. Yessir. I said $10. You can even bring your own beverages.

I hope to see you there. Regardless, the very best wishes to you and yours for the New Year.

Dimensions of a Deltabilly Boy

Thursday, December 2nd, 2010

Welcome to the site.

I am a songwriter, a guitarist, a singer; a purveyor and interpreter of American roots, particularly Blues and Folk and what some call Americana, which is a wonderfully broad umbrella. I  play for adults and for children. I perform solo, and am leader of the Deltabilly Boys and Bright Moments bands (in New Orleans and New England respectively). And I am collaborator and (co-conspirator) with members of the Boston-based progressive rock group Morphine. I enjoy the diversity of my work, and I fill no one’s shoes but my own. Click on the heading above to find out more, and check out the tour schedules for upcoming dates. There’s some good ones on the horizon!

Scroll below to read up on recent adventures. The tour with Members of Morphine (The Ever-Expanding Elastic Waste Band) went fabulously — thank yous are due to all who were involved in making it happen (particularly my manager Brenda Prescott and our road manager/sound engineer John Overstreet) and to the many good folks that came out to the shows. Very soon we will have MOM&JL/EEEWB T-shirts and CDs for sale on the website. For now you can go to CD Baby for CDs. Jeremy Lyons CDs are available on this site.

All the Best,

NERFA Newbie Plugs In

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

Hello Friends,

Having just returned from my first Northeastern Regional Folk Alliance (NERFA) conference, I’m shifting gears and am out on the road with Members of Morphine.

NERFA was a great experience. I made some new friends, and ran into old ones (shout out to Roy Bookbinder!). Special thanks to all who included me in their showcases. And to all the kids who sang along at my Delta Silly set for the Family Showcase.

I discovered some very talented artists, and got a sense of the range of possibilities open for me as a solo performer and songwriter. So… this autumn/winter I will be working in earnest on my solo album (with the working title “my solo album”).

Shifting gears: The (Ever-Expanding) Elastic Waste Band (Members of Morphine & Jeremy Lyons) is off on our second tour to the Midwest.

Great show last night at The Saint in Asbury Park!

Remaining dates are below; check the “tour” page for details.

11/18 Cleveland: The Beachland Ballroom & Tavern
11/19 Cincinnati: Historic Southgate Hall
11/20 Chicago: Reggie’s Live
11/21 Detroit: The Magic Bag

Cheers,

This show’s hot! Bonerama with Members of Morphine & Jeremy Lyons

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

Swamp low rockers Members of Morphine & Jeremy Lyons and New Orleans funk/rock roof-raisers Bonerama at Sullivan Hall in NEW YORK CITY on Fri, 11/5/10.

Go here and use the promo code “lowrock” to get a $5 discount on advance tix.

Bonerama: a rock band fronted by NOLA second-line inspired trombones who bring Led Zeppelin’s version of “When the Levee Breaks” back to the Delta of the river that inspired it. Mark Mullins runs his ’bone through a wah-wah pedal and calls Jimi Hendrix his favorite trombone player.

They will be preceded by MoM&JL, a power trio that abstains from the rock-god cliché through a lineup of two-string bass (Jeremy Lyons), baritone sax (Dana Colley), and drums (Jerome Deupree). Dana runs his bari sax through all kinds of guitar-like electronics and references Rahsaan Roland Kirk with his circular-breathing and blowing two saxes at once. Jeremy adds the smoldering heat of the Delta blues honed during his decade-plus of playing the streets and clubs of New Orleans. Dana and Jerome, the surviving members of Morphine, update and push beyond the legacy of that ’90s underground favorite.

Craig Klein of Bonerama added tasty riffs to MoM&JL’s self-titled debut album (also known as the Ever Expanding Elastic Waste Band), just as a good guest should. But both of these bands swelter up the place live, and the prospect that they might share some tunes has folks planning a trip to the City. Bolt Bus it. Fung Wah if you have to. You might want to pack the hankie, ’cause it’s going to be hot up in there.

10/24   Jeremy Lyons & the Deltabilly Boys reunion at dba in New Orleans!!

Welcome!

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

So. It’s been about five years since I migrated from New Orleans to New England after “the troubles” as a friend of mine down there likes to call them. (If you’re not sure what I mean, search up “August 29, 2005.”) Things have changed for me since then; I figure it’s time to revamp the website to better serve the various projects in which I am engaged. So here we go.

Look up there at the top of the screen (to the right of the fetching fellow in the photo). You see “Jeremy Lyons” (that’s me, my solo projects, and the “Deltabilly” brand), “Jeremy & Members of Morphine” (me doing something new with a couple of straight up, solid Rock gents), and “Delta Silly Music for Kids” (that’s me doing my bit for the next generation). Check out the categories and sub-categories. All good stuff. Several flavors of Jeremy, but all me. There are sounds, sights, information, merchandise, and communications. Speaking of which, please drop us a line. Love to hear from you.

********************************
In the latest “News,” Dana Colley, Jerome Deupree and I went out for eight dates as “Members of Morphine and Jeremy Lyons: the Ever Expanding Elastic Waste Band.” We hit Ithaca, Cleveland, Chicago, Detroit, Iowa City, Cincinnati, DC and Philly. Dana and sound-man/road-manager John Overstreet had the forethought to put together a series of video shorts of the tour. Kudos to them. And kudos to my manager Brenda Prescott and to Jesse Ewan (of Chicago’s Double Door club). They were in charge of coordinating the tour.

Check out the videos here.

We’ve released our debut CD; the disc is a nice mix. There are live tracks from our Wednesday residency at Atwood’s Tavern in Cambridge, MA. There are also tracks recorded at Hi N Dry studios in Somerville. Three of my originals are beautifully set with Dana’s electric baritone sax and Jerome’s tasty drumming. There are cameos of a few prominent New Orleans horn players. There are a couple of free jams (fun new territory for me), and re-imagined Morphine tracks by D & J’s pal, the late Mark Sandman. Top it all off with cover art featuring an original painting by Dana Colley. Check it all out here.

“Jeremy Lyons’ Delta-Silly Music for Kids has become a hot seller at Stellabella Toys in Cambridge, where I lead weekly singalongs. We’re working on plans for a follow-up record.

But first I am focusing on writing new material, and making inroads to the folk scene. To that end I will be making appearances at Club Passim’s Labor Day Campfire and at NERFA later in the fall. A large percentage of my time on stage over the past 25 years has been the presentation of other people’s songs. It is a real delight (and a challenge) to present more of my own songs.

Finally, plans are in the works for more road dates with Members of Morphine, including a trip down to Louisiana in the fall. Stay tuned – watch this space. Sign up for our email blasts!

Cheers!

Jeremy Lyons
